Field of activity
Commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the project "Improvement of grid and system integration of variable renewable energies in South Africa" supports national and municipal actors in the South African electricity sector in implementing the energy transition. These include, but are not limited to, the Department of Energy, the Regulatory Authority, the State Power Company, and municipal distribution companies. The central element of the energy transition is a comprehensive reform of the electricity sector towards far-reaching liberalization of electricity generation and trading, including issues such as the unbundling of the vertically integrated energy supplier Eskom, the development of a competitive electricity market and the corresponding adjustment of the regulatory framework. Central actors are advised on specific issues in the course of the electricity sector reform. In addition, high-level dialogue events are held in order to strengthen the awareness of the problem and the problem-solving skills of relevant specialists and managers. In cooperation with local educational institutions, further training offers for specialists and executives are developed. In addition, selected technological innovations to improve the implementation of an energy transition are funded.
Your tasks
- Technical advice on selected topics of the South African energy transition, especially in the areas of electricity market regulation and electricity market design
- Advice on content and conceptual issues on overarching topics of the energy transition
- Conceptual further development of the consulting approach and the focus topics of the project as well as identification and processing of new topics, also for follow-up projects
- Continuous technical coordination with relevant stakeholders and further development of the specialist networks in South Africa and Europe
- Management of the implementation partners and consultants
- Support of the project management in reporting
- Participation in the management of information and knowledge as well as in the monitoring of the program
your profile
- University degree in law or economics with a focus on regulation or energy management or a comparable course
- Proven qualification and several years of work experience in the field of electricity market reform and electricity market regulation both in Europe and internationally
- Several years of relevant professional experience in the energy sector, preferably acquired in developing or emerging countries, is an advantage
- Strategic competence and demonstrable ability for conceptual work
- Very good feeling for intercultural political and technical advice at all hierarchical levels
- Very good (project) management and network skills as well as high team spirit
- Proficient in German and English
